Using Long Exposure technique to create Dreamy and Creamy Water Flow Photographs

  1. Set your camera on tripod and compose the shot. Neutral Density filter is required to block the light when the shutter is kept open longer. Stronger ND Filter is recommended if good amount of ambient light. At dawn or dusk, lower intensity ND filter will be required. At night, you may not require any ND filter.
  2. Set your camera to Manual (M) shooting mode.
  3. Depending on how fast the water is moving, different marks of shutter speed can be tried. The exposure time differs with the amount of ambient light and the surroundings. In the example image, various shots were taken in the range of 2.5 sec shutter speed to 30 secs.
  4. Based on the shutter speed, lens and focal length, aperture can be fixed. In the example image, the aperture was set at f/10 on 24-70mm, focal length was 48.0mm.
  5. Set the ISO to the lowest number.
  6. Do not forget to take the shots from various angles and also on horizontal as well as vertical orientation in creative perspectives.
  7. Please note that the different camera settings will have to be used depending on each unique shooting scene, exposure may vary from one situation to another. You will have to experiment and shoot the images with various combinations of ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture settings in order to attain the results that you have in your mind.
